No time for sleep! Prep the car for MOBARA half-day!!

DSC_1030.JPG

Sleep is something you think you need, but you can go a pretty long time without it. When it comes to driving though, a good rest really helps keep your mind straight so you’re still precise behind the wheel. I wasn’t about to miss some driving due to needing an old man nap though, and that’s exactly what leads us into this blog. Pushing to drive no matter what! Here we go! Enjoy!

Starting where we left off, kind of, we ventured out from Mobara to grab some fuel. This gas attendant was the man, and even hooked us up with some cool snacks while we waited for our fuel!

Back at the track, we grabbed a quick lunch with everyone! Mobara has a great restaurant right on site, and I could pass the opportunity to have some Tonkatsu (fried pork with cabbage and rice); so delicious!

And you remember this Chaser from the last set. Excuse the low quality, these pictures are all from my iPhone.

And that was it! What a great day at Mobara! I was so happy to finally get the chance to drive this track! I know I left a lot on the table, as this was my real first day driving the Silvia in the dry. It was VERY loose, and impossible to keep up with Andy’s car (265 rear). We made a few changes, at the next track event, that REALLY woke the car up - I’ll explain later! Here are a couple pictures from the event that I forgot to add to the other blog! Enjoy!

Depending on which route we took, we could drastically cut down on our toll costs. I think it was about 2800yen each way. (~$28).

I don’t have much footage after this - we were so exhausted so we grabbed some Curry Chicken from this enormous mall, and then headed back home to pass out. Long day of prepping the cars tomorrow!

No corndog like a 7/11 or Family Mart corndog. I don’t eat this shit at home, but it’s too damn good here. Japan is so wild, look at the little ketchup/mustang packet. You fold it in half to break it open and then squeeze it together to dispense the perfect combo. Genius Japan, genius.

This is Andy’s other car; FD3S. We may or may not be turning this one into a MSC competition car. He has some awesome plans, and with his driving talent I see him doing really well! More on this later, but damn it sounds good.

With plans to go to the mountains, I needed some damn headlights. The last time we went up, I barely had one headlight and it made for a not so fun time, considering it’s pitch black up there. We weren’t going to have that issue this time! Also took the time to fix the 180’s brake lights.

Lights and wiring issues are such a PITA to me, so we spent some good time getting it right, and it was a NIGHT and DAY difference.

Back at the shop, it was time to fix up Andy’s car a bit. We pulled the fender and bumper and fiberglassed all the cracks/splits to let dry overnight. This is a super easy task, even with a little hardware store Fiberglass kit. After mixing (I always go a little heavy on the hardener and work fast), just make sure to lay down some resin first, and then apply the fiberglass mat onto the wet spot. Then use a brush and some more resin to soak the entire mat. It should almost take on a gel like form. Let it dry overnight. Ofcourse, make sure you rig up the fender, or whatever part, in a place where its pushing the crack together and that it will stay that way overnight.

Off to the favorite Sushi place again! Tomorrow was a Mobara day, but Andy wanted to fix his panels and keep costs down, so his 180 wouldn’t be coming. The plan was; sleep early, wake up at 4, cruise up to Mobara, run all day, head back home, then up to the mountains, then straight to the BM Event at Nikko. Long few days, but going to be so worth it!

$1 per plate for the best damn sushi you’ve ever had. The rice is too perfect. I could eat here every single night. After about 10-12 plates….for myself… we were out!

Handed off the camera to Andy, and went out for my session! I’m not sure if this was before or after we adjusted the damping in the rear, but we adjusted it to full soft (from full hard), and WOW.

The car was a whole new animal. A grip monster! Not only could I absorb the curbing much smoother, which meant I could stay on throttle longer without have to correct from a curb abruption, but the car would dig into the surface more and made for an immensely different and more exciting driving experience. Simple changes make the most difference, it’s crazy! Better feel, more control, and more speed (most importantly), let me play with how aggressive I could be on entry. With just a few laps of getting adjusted to the new setup, I was able to push the car much harder than before and it was way more predictable. Shocking difference, to be honest.

Just an overall fun day of testing and dialing the car in even more. The changes consisted of dialing in rear suspension/alignment and stepping up to a 235/40/17 in the rear. MUCH much more dialed setup. Very happy with how the car was feeling at this event.

We did overfill the trans a little bit, which lead to quite the mess underneath. Once it sorted out its own problem, all was clean and fine.

They gave me the option of only running a half day, and I took it! 8000yen was a steal for 6 sessions before lunch! Plenty of testing time, and if we left early, that would give us much more time to prep before heading up to the mountains this evening.

Easy to forget how awesome and reliable these cars can be when all they do is see the trailer and the garage back at home. Driving your car every day makes you closer to your car. You find all its quirks and can understand each one that much better the more time you spend behind the wheel. It’s also much easier to notice when things just aren’t right. But, once you getting all the little bits working together in perfection harmony, street driving your drift car is so rewarding. You feel like you can do anything with it! 2 hours to Mobara, 6 sessions of hard driving, and 2 hours back without a single hiccup. So so so enjoyable. Keep up on your maintenance!
